Install & Sign In

Getting started with TabMail takes just a few minutes.

Requirements

  • Thunderbird v145 or later — If Thunderbird is not installed, the TabMail installer can download and install the official Mozilla Thunderbird build
  • A TabMail account — You’ll create one during setup

Installation methods

The easiest way to get started is using our installer, which will:

  • Install Mozilla Thunderbird if you don’t have it (official build downloaded from Mozilla)
  • Install the TabMail add-on directly into your Thunderbird profile
  • Set up the required native search helper
  1. Download the installer from the download page
    • macOS: Download the .pkg file (works on Intel & Apple Silicon)
    • Windows: Download the .exe file (Windows 10 & 11)
  2. Run the installer and follow the on-screen instructions
  3. Sign in — A sign-in prompt will appear when you first open Thunderbird. Create an account or log in with your existing credentials.

Expert: Manual installation

If you already have Thunderbird installed or prefer manual control:

  1. Download the add-on from the download page (switch to “Manual” tab)
    • Download tabmail-latest.xpi
  2. Install the add-on:
    • Open Thunderbird
    • Go to Tools → Add-ons and Themes (or press Ctrl/Cmd + Shift + A)
    • Click the gear icon ⚙️ and select “Install Add-on From File…”
    • Select the downloaded XPI file
  3. Install the Full-Text Search Helper (required):
    • macOS/Linux: Run curl -fsSL https://cdn.tabmail.ai/releases/native-fts/install.sh | bash in Terminal
    • Windows: Run irm https://cdn.tabmail.ai/releases/native-fts/install.ps1 | iex in PowerShell
    • Restart Thunderbird
  4. Sign in — A sign-in prompt will appear. Create an account or log in with your existing credentials.

Verifying the installation

After installation, you should see:

  • A TabMail icon in Thunderbird’s toolbar
  • Tags appearing on emails as TabMail analyzes them

To check your signin status:

  • Click the TabMail icon in the toolbar to open the popup
  • The popup will show your signin status and account information

Once signed in, TabMail will begin indexing your emails in the background. This runs locally and may take a few minutes depending on your inbox size.

If something isn’t working, check Troubleshooting or open a support ticket.
